John J. Huygens, 84, of Hospers, died Monday, December 16, 1991 at the Sheldon Hospital.

Services were held Wednesday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Hospers. The Reverend Brian Hughes officiated. Burial was in St. Anthony’s Cemetery under the direction of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home, Sheldon.

Mr. Huygens was born September 26, 1907 in Newkirk , the son of Albertus and Gertrude (Den Hartog) Huygens. He married Bernice Ann Jungers May 9, 1938 in Hospers. A lifelong Hospers area resident, he was a business partner in Wesselink Garage in Hospers for two years. He farmed in the Granville area for three years. In 1943 he moved to a farm east of Hospers where he farmed until 1976 when he retired and moved into town.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Al (Marlene) Schwartz and Mrs. Mel (Mary All) Kruizenga, both of Hospers, and Mrs. Pat (Iva Jean) Mulhern of Fort Huachuca, Arizona; a sister, Henrietta Vander Zwaag of Hull; two brothers, James C. Huygens, Hospers and Ivan V. De Graaf, Edmonds, Washington; three grandsons, Alan and John Schwartz and Larry Anderson; three granddaughters, Lori Abele, Amy and Katy Mulhern; and two great-grandsons, David and Christopher Schwartz.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Adrian.
