Deborah Baker, 41, of Hawarden died Thursday, August 5, at the Hawarden Community Hospital at Hawarden due to cancer.

Memorial services were at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, August 11, at the Christian Reformed Church in Hawarden, with the Reverend Joseph Mahe and Martin Dam officiating.

Deborah Ellen Maatman was born November 11, 1957, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, daughter of Russell and Jean (Sherrard) Maatman. The family moved to Sioux Center where she attended Sioux Center Christian Grade School, Unity Christian High School and graduated from Dordt College. She married Steve Baker on July 12, 1986, at Sioux Center. The couple lived at Hawarden. She worked for the Sheldon Mail, Hawarden Independent and Rock Valley Bee newspapers; K-Products at Orange City; and 10 years at the Mid-Sioux Opportunity Office at Hawarden, before working as a paralegal at the Carter and Carter Law Office at Sioux City.

Survivors include her husband, of Hawarden; two sons - Samuel David and Dale Steven, both of Hawarden; her parents of Sioux Center; one brother and his wife, John and Anne Maatman of Sioux Center; three sister Susan and her husband Larry Meyers of Sheldon , Rebecca Maatman of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Ruth and her husband Roger Carter of Sioux City.
