From the Sioux County Capital, November 5, 1936

CORNELIUS SMIT

Cornelius Smit, an old settler of the Middleburg vicinity, died Monday morning in the Hull hospital of heart disease. He had been critically ill for two weeks.

Mr. Smit was born in North Holland, the Netherlands, about 78 years ago and when he came to this country first settled at Pella, later coming to Sioux county where he lived for 50 years. He was married to Miss Teuntje Ver Doorn and the couple had two children, one of whom died while still a child. His wife died about nine years ago. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Gerrit Koerselman, who lives on the home place, one and one half miles northwest of Middleburg. Several brothers and sisters are living in the old country.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday by the Rev. Mr. Mansen in the Reformed church in Middleburg. Burial was made in the Middeburg cemetery.
