From the Alton Democrat, February 6, 1925:

OLD SETTLER PASSES BEYOND

Mrs. C. Smit, aged 54 years and 4 months, died very suddenly from heart failure at her home near Middleburg on January 6th, the funeral being held from the Ref. church of Middleburg, Rev. Mansen officiating, on Jan. 9th.

Mrs. Smit was born in N. Braband, the Netherlands, coming to the United States 35 years ago and being wed to C. Smit at the parsonage at Middleburg 30 years ago. Her maiden name was Teuntje Verdoorn. One daughter Emma, Mrs. Gerrit Koerselman, survives, besides the bereaved husband. Four brothers and six sisters [i.e., six brothers and four sisters] also survive, being Jos., The Netherlands; Jno. of Boyden; Wm. of Newkirk; Dick of Hollendale; Arie of Hollendale and Antonie of Rock Valley; Miss Marie Verdoorn of Rock Valley; Mrs. Hennink of Rock Valley; Mrs. Herman Luymes of Boyden; Ms. Conrad Van Zee of Rock Valley.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Smit, Teuntje, b. 10 Aug 1873, d. 6 Jan 1925, h: Cornelis, buried Capel Twp Cem Middleburg.

Her death certificate has Mrs. Teuntje Smit, wife of Cornelius Smit; born Aug. 10, 1873 in the Netherlands; father Hendrik van[?] Doorn, mother's name not given; died Jan. 6, 1925 at 10:30 p.m.; cause myocarditis and dilatation of heart; secondary cause high blood pressure; buried Middleburg, Capel Township.

Her husband's obituary (posted separately) also spells his name Cornelius, although his entry in the Sioux County Cemetery Index has him as Cornelis.
