Mrs. Urban (Helen) Holles, 75, of Granville, died Saturday, December 29, 1990 at a Sioux City Hospital after a brief illness.

Services were held Wednesday, January 1, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville with the Reverend Robert W. Gralapp officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen.

Mrs. Holles, the former Helen Kreber, was born February 16, 1915, rural Granville, the daughter of August and Clara (Gukeisen) Kreber. She was raised in the Granville area and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School at Granville until the 10th grade. She then transferred to St. Mary’s Academy at Alton where she graduated in 1933. She then attended Cherokee Junior College at Cherokee for two years and Westmar College at Le Mars. She was assistant postmistress at Granville for several years before her marriage.

On June 20, 1938 she married Urban Holles at Granville. In 1946 they purchased and moved to the farm where he was born, farming until retiring on the farm in 1975. They moved into Granville in December 1983. With the help of her family, she edited the Granville Shopper from June 1959 until March 1975.

Mrs. Holles was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Catholic Daughters of America and Ladies Catholic Order of Foresters for more than 50 years and she was also a member of the Third Order of St. Francis in Remsen. She was a past member of St. Joseph’s School advisory board and Spalding School advisory board. She was presently serving on the Granville Centennial advisory board. She was a volunteer assistant librarian at St. Joseph Grade School for more than 20 years. She was current member of AARP and Granville Senior Citizens. She co-authored the book History of O’Brien County and also helped to republish the book Black Soil.

Survivors include her husband, two sons, Gerald of Minneapolis and Dennis of Dell Rapids, South Dakota; two daughters, Mrs. David (Jean) Clark of Estherville and Julie Holles of Minneapolis; five grandchildren; three brothers, Clarence and Francis, both of Granville, and Arnold of Alton; and three sisters, Mrs. Ed (Irene) Schlichte of Alton, Mrs. Eleanore Britton of Madison, Wisconsin and Mrs. William (Viola) Nelson Toel of Cherokee.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Evelyn) Klein and Mrs. Richard (Mary Jane) Meis.
