Mrs. Philip Hoffman, 85, of Alton, died Monday in a hospital at Orange City of a brief illness.

Services were held at 11 A.M. Thursday in St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Alton. The Reverend Bruce LeFebre officiated. Burial was held in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home at Remsen. Rosaries were recited at 3 and 8 P.M. at the Church.

Mrs. Hoffman, the former Florence Henrich, was born August 7, 1894, at Harley, South Dakota. She lived there until 1901 when he moved with her family to Alton where she received her education. She attended Clark College at Dubuque and taught school for one year.

She was married July 4, 1918, in Alton. They moved to Caledonia, Minnesota, where they farmed for two years and moved to Lennox, South Dakota, where he worked for Stagel Lumber Company. In 1925 they moved to Sutherland where he managed the Stagel Lumber Company until 1943 when they moved to Alton and farmed until 1947. Mr. Hoffman died January 13, 1947, and she moved into town.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Guild and Rosary Society.

Survivors include two sons, Edward S. of Winneika, Illinois and Philip J. of Alton; one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Evelyn) Donovan of Jefferson, Iowa; 19 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one brother, George of Alton.
