From the Alton Democrat, March 17, 1923, Rock Valley news:

We noted in last weeks items of the death of Mr. J. H. Lynch of Sunnyside Wash. His remains were shipped here last Saturday to await arrangements for interment. The deceased was born at Arthur, Ontario, Canada, and died at his home in Sunnyside Wash. in the 58th year of his age. When a lad of 16 years he came to Iowa and was employed on a farm near LeMars. When he reached his majority he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Buckley at Maurice, May 5, 1895. After their marriage they came to Rock Valley and opened a wagon making and repair shop in which business he succeeded admirably.

In 1903 he disposed of his business here and moved to North Dakota where he remained four years and from there he moved to Sunnyside, Washington, where he held a position with the government in the department of Interior. He was a member of the Yoeman [i.e., Brotherhood of American Yeomen] and the Catholic order of Foresters of Rock Valley. He was a man of exemplary habits, genial and companionable, and led a useful and unostentatious life, and bequeathed to his companion and daughter and loved ones a legacy that they may contemplate with solemn satisfaction.

Funeral services occurred at St. Marys Catholic church conducted by Rev. Rohder of Alvord Monday at 10 A.M. after which his remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery. His relatives and friends have the sympathy of the community in their hour of sorrow.

His probate file is also available on Ancestry.com. It shows his wife as Mary A. Lynch (age 57) and daughter Kathryn R. Lynch (age 25), his only child. He left a small farm and a modest amount of personal and farm property, valued at a total of $4077.80, and a little cash.
