NICK VANDE VEGTE

Nick Vande Vegte passed away at his home northwest of Rock Valley last Thursday forenoon [March 15], aged 45 years and 15 days. Mr. Vande Vegte was taken sick a few weeks ago with influenza, from which pneumonia developed.

The subject of this sketch was born in Holland Feb. 24, 1878. His people came to this country several years ago, and for many years Mr. Vande Vegte lived in this vicinity. He was a man who was kind to his family, was a good neighbor and friend and had the highest respect of all who knew him.

Besides his brothers and aged parents, who live in and around Rock Valley, he leaves his wife and a family of seven children, two boys and five girls, the oldest being about sixteen years of age.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 19, at the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, sermon by Rev. Weersing, of Hull, and the remains were taken to Valley View cemetery for burial. The funeral services were largely attended by sympathizing friends, who in this way showed their respect for the departed and their sympathy for the bereaved wife and children.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Vande Vegte, Nick, b. 1876, d. 1923, father, ss Mary, Valley View Cem Rock Valley IA.

The 1910 U.S. census for Sioux County (Ancestry.com) shows him in Plato Township (south of Rock Valley), age 33, married 7 years, born Holland, immigrated 1883, speaks English, a farmer, renting his farm; wife Mary (25), born Holland, immigrated 1893, speaks English; and children Henrietta (5), Bart (3), Henry (2), and Cora (6/12). His brother (presumably), Albert (29) and family live next door.

A search for him in Sioux County in the 1920 census does not find him, although several other Vande/Vander Vegtes are farming in Plato Township. However, Sioux Township (northwest of Rock Valley, and where he may have been living) appears to be missing from the census.
