From the Sioux County Index (Hull), February 16, 1923:

Mr. S. Oelen Passes Away

Thursday Feb. 8 at 1:20 P.M. Mr. S. Oelen died at the home of his son Hilbert in Hull, aged 72 years and 5 months. He was one of the early settlers of the Hollanders in this section and one of the charter members of the Hull Christian Reformed church, which he served as elder for a number of years and the congregation may well remember his labor for its welfare. With Mr. Oelen one more of those who have borne the heat of the day and the cold of the night in the good fight of the faith, passes to his reward.

The funeral was held on Monday, Feb. 12, from the Christian Reformed church, Rev. J. J. Weersing, officiating. There were many old time friends from the neighboring towns present to do their last respects to Mr. Oelen.

Only one son survives, Hilbert of this place.
