From the Hawarden Independent, February 1, 1923:

Lose Their Only Child

Little Beryl Eileen Vander Ven, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Vander Ven, passed away at their home southwest of town Saturday evening, Jan. 24th, about 9 o'clock. Her death, which was caused by pneumonia, came as a shock to the community as her illness was only of two days' duration. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. W. A. Winterstein officiating, and the little form was laid to rest in Grace Hill cemetery.

Beryl Eileen Vander Ven was born August 11, 1919, being almost three and one-half years old at the time of her death. She was an unusually bright child and will be sorely missed in the home. Sincerest sympathy goes out to the grief stricken parents in their sad hour.
