From the Sioux County Index (Hull), January 19, 1923:

James Peterson was born in Denmark in the year 1849 and died in Sioux City on Jan. 8, 1923, following an operation for a cataract at the German Lutheran Hospital, being 73 yrs 11 months and twenty days of age.

He migrated to the U.S. in the spring of 1869, settling in the state of Wisconsin. He remained there two years and then came on to N.W. Iowa, taking up a homestead northeast of Hull, which he held until his death.

In 1876 he married Sarah Comforth. To them were born three children, Herbert James of Hull, J. W. of Doon and Myrtle Irene Flessner, of Mankato, Minn. Seventeen years ago the father and mother moved to Sioux City.

James Peterson was one of the earliest members of the Odd Fellows Fraternity of this community having been connected with the order for about 40 years.

Besides the wife and three children he is also survived by one grandchild, Marie Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. "Bert" Peterson of this vicinity.

The funeral was held at the Hull Methodist church conducted by Rev. A. F. Schuldt and the remains were laid to rest in Hope cemetery.

From the Alton Democrat, January 20, 1923, Sheldon news:

James Peterson, a commission merchant, died on Monday Jan. 8 in Sioux City, his home for the past 15 years. Born in Denmark 73 years ago, he came to the U.S. at the age of 20 and settled at Hull. Going later to Sioux City he was employed at the stock yards where he organized the Peterson Commission Co.

Funeral services were conducted on last Wednesday at Wescott's undertaking parlors. Rev. B. O. Lyle was the minister in charge. The remains were then shipped to Hull and interred.

Mr. Peterson is survived by his wife, who resides in Sioux City, two sons, H. J. and John W. Peterson, both of Doon, and one daughter, Mrs. J. C. Fischner of Mankato, Minn.
