From the Rock Valley Bee, February 2, 1923:

MARY ANN LINNAN

Mary Ann Linnan was born in November 1863, at Littleport, Clayton County, Iowa, and died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Thos. Cullinan, on Wednesday, January 24, 1923.

In 1873, she came to Maurice, Ia., with her parents, and in 1891, she came to Rock Valley where she has since made her home.

The deceased had been ailing for some time past, but was not confined to her bed until five weeks prior to her death. All that medical skill and loving hands could do for her was given at all times. Even though her suffering was intense, she never complained to anyone but bore it all patiently until the end. She was a noble and generous character, and was known to be ever ready with a helping hand and heart to aid those in time of need. She was a devout member of the Catholic Church.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Church in Rock Valley at nine o'clock Saturday morning. Solemn Requium High Mass was solemnized by Rev. Father O'Reilly, her pastor, assisted by Father Roder of Alvord, and Father Mason, of Le Mars. That her friends were numerous, was evident by the large attendance at her funeral. Interment was made in St. Mary's Cemetery at Maurice, where she was gently laid away be her six nephews, John, Michael and Martin Cullinan, Thomas and Luke Linnan, and William McCool.

She leaves to mourn her death, one brother, John, of Maurice; three sisters, Mrs. Thos. Cullinan of this city, Mrs. Patrick Cullinan, of Gary, S. Dak., and Mrs. Robt. McCool, of Madison, S. Dak. One sister, Mrs. B. M. Doherty, died in March 1909; three brothers, Thomas, in March 1893, the other two in infancy.

From the Alton Democrat, February 3, 1923, Rock Valley news:

MISS MARY LINNAN--PIONEER WOMAN PASSES ON

Miss Mary Linnan who was afflicted with cancer of the stomach, died at the home of Thomas Cullinan Jan. 24 in the 63rd year of her age. The deceased was born at Littleport Iowa, and when ten years old she came to Sioux county with her parents and located near Maurice, where she grew to womanhood and endured with her parents the privations incident to pioneer days in the wild and sparsely settled northwest.

In 1893 she came to Rock Valley and when her sister Mrs. B. M. Doherty died, she entered that home and cared for the motherless children for a number of years, whose memory the children will ever revere for her loving and tender care. She led a quiet and unassuming life, and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of her circle of friends. She was a devout member of the Catholic church and lived for the welfare and comfort of others.

Funeral services occurred Saturday morning at St. Mary's church. Rev. O'Reilly conducted requiem high mass, assisted by Rev. Rhoder of Alvord and Rev. Mason of LeMars. She was taken to Maurice where interment occurred. She leaves a brother John Linnan, of Maurice who held the honorable position of supervisor of his district in the county, and three sisters, namely Mrs. Thomas Cullinan of Rock Valley, Mrs. Robert McCool of Madison, S.D. and Mrs. Pat Cullinan of Gary, S.D. They were all present with their husbands to pay their last respects to a departing sister, who now stands in the glittering sunlight of the eternal day.
