The Rev. John Winter, 84, formerly of Boyden, died Thursday, July 17, at a hospital in Waverly of cancer. Services were at 2 p.m. Monday in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Waverly, and at 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. John Lutheran Church at Boyden. Burial was in the Boyden parish cemetery with the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home of Waverly in charge.
The Rev. Daniel R. Hart of St. John Church conducted the commital service. The Rev. David A. Solberg of Waverly conducted the service at St. John Church. The Rev. Lawrence Winter, of Zap, N.D., a cousin, also participated.
The decease was born June 9, 1896, in Boyden. He served in the 88th Infantry, U.S. Army, in World War I. He was graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, and from Waverly Theological Seminary in Dubuque in 1927. He served churches at Redfield, Crandon, Tulare and Zell, all in South Dakota; at San Antonio, Texas., and in Elvira, Earlville and Hopkinton, all in Iowa. He retired in 1961 and moved to Waverly.
He married Annetta Mueller, Feb. 12, 1928 at Parkston, S.D. She died in January of 1949. He married Elsie Mueller May 27, 1951 at Waverly.
Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Don (Norma) Jorgensen of Conroe, Texas and Mrs. Robert (Lorraine) Lightbody of Valencia, Calif.,; a sister, Mrs. Dorathea Fick of Luverne, Minn.; two brothers, Albert of Boyden and the Rev. Theodor of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren.
