Died: February 27,1921

Harry R. Hawks died about 5:30 Sunday morning at the hospital at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station from pneumonia. He had been ill for more than a week. The remains were shipped to Hawarden and reached here Tuesday evening. Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning at the Methodist Episcopal Church, conducted by the pastor, Reverend W.A. Winterstein, and interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery. Members of the American Legion formed a funeral escort and marched from the undertaking rooms to the church and American Legion members also acted as pallbearers.

Harry Ray Hawks was born at Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, March 30, 1895, so just lacked a month of being 26 years of age. In 1898 he was taken by his parents to Pocahontas County, Iowa, where they lived for five years, when they moved to Bode, Iowa, and lived there for five years. The family moved to Hawarden in 1908 and Harry attended the public schools here. He united with the Methodist Church while living in this city and was active in the work of the church, being a member of the choir. He also was a member of the Hawarden band. About five years ago he went to Sioux Falls where he was employed for several years. During the war he endeavored to enter the service of his country but was rejected on account of physical disabilities. In April, 1920, he was accepted for service in the United States Navy and has since been stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training School. He was married to Minnie Raetz just a few days prior to his entrance into the naval service but his wife passed away last October. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. and Margaret (Campbell) Hawks, moved to Westfield, Iowa, a little over two years ago.

Besides his parents and five brothers, Lee Hawks of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Mrs. Mabel Puglesa, Eldon, Alfred, Russell and Lester Hawks of Westfield. All were present at the funeral.

The family has the sincere sympathy of all in their bereavement.
