Mr. Donald Hop, age 85, of Orange City, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, March 25, at 11:00am, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Michael Hardeman and the Rev. Elizabeth Hardeman will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 9:45am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Donald Marvin was born on July 4, 1931, in Orange City, the son of Jake H. and Elizabeth (Veenstra) Hop. He was raised in rural Orange City, Maurice, and Alton, graduating from the Alton High School.

On March 2, 1951, he married Marlys Jean Netten in Orange City. He served in the United States military during the Korean Conflict, stationed at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. They then settled in Orange City, where he was a sign painter and later a salesman for the Vogel Paint Company. For most of his adult life, he was employed as an officer of the Northwestern State Bank in Orange City.

Don was a member of the American Reformed Church. In earlier years, he belonged to the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and treasurer. He and Marlys were also active in the Couples Club.

In addition, he was a member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post and a charter member of the Jaycees, both in Orange City. He also served on the board of directors of the Public Library and was a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, both in Orange City.

Don enjoyed camping, golfing, and traveling to 48 states in four years during retirement. While traveling, he and Marlys volunteered with SOWER (Servants on Wheels Ever Ready). He also liked construction, helping to finish several of their homes.

Survivors include his wife of more than 66 years; three sons, Bruce A. Hop, of Austin, Texas; Daniel J. Hop, and his wife, Kym, of Rapid City, South Dakota; and Kevin D. Hop, and his wife, Sharilyn, of Onalaska, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Kameron J. Hop of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Madison Hop of Rapid City; Jennie, and her husband, Stephen Baxley, of Dallas, Texas; and Emily Hop, of Onalaska; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Hop, of Le Mars, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Julius and Howard Hop; and three sisters, Arty Vegter, Ruby De Vries, and an infant.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice and the Robert M. Dunlop Wildlife Area.
