De Jong, Mayris (Mrs. Koenraad M. "Rod") 1939-2017

Mrs. Mayris De Jong, age 77, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, March 23, at 10:00am, at the New Hope Evangelical Free Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jeffrey Whitt will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Thursday, at 9:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Mayris Gayle was born on May 9, 1939, in Orange City, the daughter of Gillis and Wilhelmina (Korver) Haverdink. She was raised in the Orange City area, where she attended elementary school and graduated from the Northwestern Classical Academy.

On September 4, 1959, she married Koenraad M. De Jong in Orange City. They farmed southwest of Orange City, where she was a homemaker. For many years, she was also a seamstress, making wedding attendant dresses and Tulip Festival costumes and working at De Vries Interiors. “Rod” passed away on February 7, 1998, in Orange City, after almost forty years of marriage.

Mrs. De Jong continued to live on the family farm until 2006, when she moved to the Pioneer Court in Orange City.

She had been an active member of several area churches, most recently the New Hope Evangelical Free Church. At these churches, she sang in the choirs and participated in Bible studies. She was also the secretary for the Dover Avenue Alliance Church in Orange City. She was an inspiration to many, dealing with several years of pain. She sent many cards and always gave solid advice.

Survivors include her two sons and their wives, Kevin and Susan De Jong, of Orange City; and their family, Josh and Jami Van Muyden, and Austin, Kaylinn, Syerah, and Oliver Van Muyden; and Dan and Kim De Jong, of Orange City, and their family, Kolbie and Tony Vande Brake, Lawton De Jong and fiancé Heather Busch, and Morgan De Jong; a brother and his wife, Eugene and Thelma Haverdink, of Orange City; two sisters-in-law, Jane Haverdink, of Orange City; and Audrey Ann Haverdink, of Ankeny; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Virgil Haverdink.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice and the Northwest Iowa Dialysis Center in Hospers.
