Mrs. Augustus William Harholt, a pioneer of Hawarden, but who for the past fourteen years has resided in Sioux City, passed away at her home at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon following a stroke. Mrs. Harholt had been in failing health for the past year but had not been bedfast preceding her death. The night before she seemed in unusually good spirits but shortly after 6 o'clock Wednesday morning she got up and told her daughter, Miss Florence, that she was very ill. Florence immediately called a physician but when she returned to her mother's room she had suffered a stroke and was in an unconscious condition until death claimed her. Mrs. George L. Moore of Hawarden was called to Sioux City and was also at the bedside of her mother when the end came.

The remains were brought to Hawarden Wednesday evening and funeral services will be held at 2:30 Friday afternoon at the Ross Funeral Home with Reverend T.H. Harding, pastor of the Associated Church, in charge. Interment will be made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Matilda Carlson was born in Smoland, Sweden, February 2, 1858, and passed away in Sioux City May 22, 1940, at the advanced age of 82 years, 3 months and 20 days. She came to America when 24 years of age, locating in Des Moines. In May of the following year she was united in marriage with August W. Harholt in Sioux City and they came immediately to Hawarden to make their home, 58 years ago.

To this union were born four children, one of whom, a son, died when a year old. Her husband passed away in November, 1918, during the severe flu epidemic.

The children who survive her are Miss Florence Harholt, Sioux City; Clarence Harholt, Aberdeen, South Dakota, and Mrs. George L. Moore, Hawarden. She also leaves one grandson, John Moore, and one sister, Mrs. Augusta Lyon of Aurora, Illinois.

Following the death of her husband Mrs. Harholt continued to make her home in this city until 14 years ago when she went to Sioux City to live with her daughter, Miss Florence, but she made frequent visits here, remaining for several weeks at a time with her other daughter. It was always a pleasure for her to come to Hawarden and visit with her old friends and neighbors with whom she formed acquaintances years ago. While in Hawarden she united with the Presbyterian Church and during her residence here she was a faithful attendant and worker in the church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Lodge. Mrs. Harholt was unusually active for her years and even up until the very last was able to look after many of the household duties in her home. She was always thoughtful of others and the members of her family were ever her uppermost thoughts and during her declining years she was rewarded for her thoughtfulness for her two daughters did all that could be done to make her last years happy ones. Many outside the family circle will be grieved to learn of her passing.
