JOHN J. HAMANN DIED AT HIS HOME AT ALVORD

John J. Hamann, a former pioneer resident of this vicinity died at his home at Alvord. The Alvord Register gives the following account:

Mr. John J. Hamann was born on the first day of March, 1851, at Brumsbuttel, Holstein, Germany. When 15 years of age he left his native land and came to America, and arrived at Davenport, Iowa, where he found work as a laborer for eight years.

On February 12, 1874, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna C. Schaefer of Davenport, who preceded him in death on March 14, last year.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Hamann took up farming and farmed in Scott County for 17 years. In the spring of the year 1891, they came to Lyon County and located on their farm southwest of Inwood, where they lived until the spring of the year 1916, when they retired from the farm and moved to Alvord, where deceased has lived ever since.

Mr. Hamann enjoyed good health until the past year. For some time he has been totally blind. During the nights from Thursday to Friday, last week, he became seriously ill and Saturday evening, March 2, at about 15 minutes before 6 o’clock, he answered the summons of death, having attained the age of 78 years and one day.

Mr. Hamann is survived by 3 sons, Herman of Alvord, Henry and Gustave of Inwood, one daughter, Alverna (Mrs. Jacob Lottmann) of Larchwood; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Thiedemann in Germany, 18 grandchildren, besides many distant relatives, a host of friend and a very large circle of acquaintances. One Cecelia preceded her father in death in the year 1909.

Mr. Hamann was ever an energetic and industrious man. While on his farm, he was considered a model farmer. He held a number of offices of trust and never acquitted himself very ably and with scrupulous honesty.

For a number of years he was mayor of Alvord and was considered by many as one of the best mayors Alvord has ever had. He was a good citizen and a fine neighbor.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at one o’clock from the house with the Reverend E.H. Jarh, pastor of the local Lutheran Church officiating.

The Lutheran choir, composed of Masdames Harry Serck, B.A. Saeger, Ben Serek, Hans Friedrichson and Messers E.W. Eisentrager, H.W. Schlotfeldt and Thos Friedrichsen, rendered several appropriate selections.

Five grandsons and Mr. John Claussen were pall bearers. Interment was made in the family lot in the Inwood Cemetery.
