Mrs. Mary Wood Died Saturday

Mrs. Mary H. Wood, for more than 54 years a resident of this city and community, passed away at her home in Hawarden about 7 o'clock Saturday morning following an illness of less than a week from pneumonia. She was past 89 years of age and although in good physical conditioner a woman of her age, she was unable to successfully combat the ravages of this disease. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at the Methodist church in this city with Rev. Robert H. Forrester of Correctionville, a former pastor of the Methodist church in this city, officiating, assisted by Rev. Robert F. Chapler, present local pastor. Music was provided by the choir of the Methodist church. Interment was in Grace Hill cemetery.
Mary Hannah Bader, daughter of Samuel Russell and Mary Catherine Bader, was born July 28, 1850, in Franklin, West Virginia. At the age of 10 years she moved with her parents to Maquoketa, Iowa, and in April, 1885, accompanied them to Hawarden and her home has since been in this community. On February 1, 1894, she was united in marriage with Israel L. Wood, but her. husband and her step-son, Fred W. Wood, preceded her in death. Since the death of her husband she has continued to live alone in her home in the west part of town, looking after her own household duties until the past few weeks.
Mrs. Wood was a thorough Christian woman in every thought and act and was dearly beloved by her neighbors and friends. She united with the Methodist church at Maquoketa, Iowa, when a young girl and transferred her membership to the Hawarden Methodist church May 30, 1897, and has been an active member ever since. She was a teacher in, the Sunday school for 27 consecutive years and at the time of her death was teacher of the ladies' class. Mrs. Wood was organizer of the Busy Bees, an organization of women helping the Christian Orphans Home in Council Bluffs. For many years this group has continued its work, though Mrs. Wood moved into town after perfecting the organization. She was organist of the Sunday school at Maquoketa. She did not confine her church activities within the bounds of her own church, but worked in and helped all groups. At one time she was a member of the Women's Relief Corps.
She leaves to mourn her loss one half-brother, Ollie A. Bader of Hawarden, three step-granddaughters and nine nephews and nieces.
