Funeral services for Benjamin Grooters,89, of Boyden, formerly of Sheldon, who passed away Sunday, May 14, at 3:30 P.M. at home after a lingering illness, were held Wednesday, May 17, at 1:30 P.M. in the First Reformed Church in Boyden. Reverend S. Moths officiated. Mrs. Scott Sneller was the organist and accompanied the soloist, Norman Moret, who sang “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “Beyond the Sunset”.

Pallbearers were Richard Blumeyer of Waterloo, Dr. Ronald Grooters of Des Moines, Dr. Harry Hansen of Marshalltown, Glen Hagerty of Allison, Iowa, Melvin Ver Steeg, Daryl Grooters, Lyle Grooters, Harold Hector.

Burial was in the Boyden Cemetery, with the Andringa Funeral Home of Sheldon in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mr. Grooters was born June 29, 1882 at Orange City, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Grooters. His youth was spent in the vicinity of Boyden, where he attended the Boyden Country School.

On March 8, 1905, he was united in marriage to Antonia S. Moret at Orange City. To this union, three children were born: Mrs. Ed (Mildred) Blumeyer of Orange City; L.V. Hrooters of Boyden and Gilbert, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Grooters farmed for a number of years in the Boyden area, except for three years when they lived in California. They, then, moved to Sheldon, where he drove a taxi for seventeen years.

Last fall they moved to Boyden to make their home in the Sunrise Apartments. He was active in church, serving six years as elder and taught for thirty years in the First Reformed Church in Sheldon. His membership was transferred to the Boyden, when they moved to Boyden.

Survivors are his wife, one daughter, one son, seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, two sisters: Mrs. Wilma G. Hills of Portland, Oregon and Mrs. Albert Kooy of Mt. Vernon, Washington, two brothers: Gerrit Grooters of Fort Dodge and Albert Grooters of Orange City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Gilbert; a son-in-law, Ed R. Blumeyer; two sisters and five brothers.
