Lawrence E. Zicafoose

Mr. Lawrence Zicafoose, age 82, of Starbuck, Minnesota, formerly of Newkirk, Iowa, passed away Sunday, April 25, at the home of a son in Austin, Minnesota. Lawrence Earl was born April 24, 1911, at McCook, Nebraska, the son of Earl and Dora (Swartz) Zicafoose. He was raised at McCook and graduated from Western Union College in Le Mars, Iowa. He later received his Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska.
He was an educator most of his life, serving as a teacher and an administrator at schools in Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota. For several years, he taught at Newkirk. He retired in 1976. In earlier years, he married Johanna Hiemstra. She passed away in January of 1943 at Sioux City, Iowa. He later married Nelvina G. Van Es in Nebraska. For many years they lived at Starbuck in the summer, and in the southern part of the United States, mostly Florida, during the winter. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, and a longtime member of the National Education Association and the Minnesota Education Association.
Survivors include his wife; son Earl and his wife Alice of Austin, and their children Amy and her husband Andy Hunger and Lon Zicafoose; son Darrel and his wife Shirley of Spencerport, New York; son Harvey and his wife Thelma of Ellendale, Minnesota, and their children Kathy and her husband Chris Crosby and their son Joshua, Keith Zicafoose, and Karen Zicafoose; two sisters, Evelyn Hutchinson of Waverly, Nebraska, Verna Hammer of Greenwood, Nebraska; and brother Clifford, formerly of Meade, Nebraska.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his brother Clarence. Funeral services were held April 28, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa, with the Rev. Chris Hoick of the Faith Evangelical Free Church in Austin officiating. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.
