MRS. L.R. GARTLAND DIED FOLLOWING OPERATION

Mrs. L.R. Gartland, 43, prominent society matron and club member of this city, died suddenly Tuesday, October 30, at the Spencer hospital, East Third Street, from an acute intestinal obstruction.

She was taken ill last weekend at her home, 457 East Eighth Street, but her condition did not become serious until Monday. An emergency operation was performed in the local hospital Monday evening. Death occurred at 6 o’clock the following morning.

The death of Mrs. Gartland, who was held in high esteem by all, and who was popularly known to Spencer residents through her work in various organizations, came as a severe shock to the community as she had been ill only a few days.

Funeral services for Mrs. Gartland were held at 9 o’clock Thursday morning, November 1, from the Gartland home and were in charge of the Reverend E. Merle Adams, of Norfolk, Nebraska, a former Congregational pastor of this city.

Special music was furnished by Mrs. H.B. Brenizer, Spencer, who played the piano “Largo” from the New World Sympathy, by Dvorak “Andante” by Beethoven, “Chorale” by Gaul and a prelude by Chopin.

Following the services here, the body was taken to Mason City, where last rites were conducted at 3 o’clock that afternoon from the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Graham, in charge of Reverend Fred Barke, Congregational Pastor at Mason City.

During the services in the Graham home, a cousin of Mrs. Gratland, Mrs. Fred Clark, of Cedar Height’s, prominently known in Spencer, sang a vocal selection. Piano accompaniment was by her daughter, Miss Clarabelle Clark. Interment was made in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

Pallbearers at Spencer were Merrill M. Moulton, Nels C. Rindsig, Howard E. King, Ralph Poole, E.P. Arnold and E. Carl Fee.

Born at Bristow, Iowa, December 19, 1890, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Graham, now of Mason City, Bernice Graham remained there a few years and later moved with her parents to Parkersburg, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood.

Following her graduation from high school at Parkersburg, Bernice Graham attended and graduated as a student of voice and music from Cornell College. She later taught voice and music at Hull and Rock Valley.

August 17, 1917, she was united in marriage to Dr. L.R. Gartland, optician, and soon after their marriage they located in Spencer, where both have taken prominent part in community activities.

At the time of her death, Mrs. Gartland was serving the North School Parent-Teachers Association as president. She was also a member of Evening Shade Chapter, No. 116, Order of Eastern Star, Spencer Federated Woman’s Club, Delphian Society and a former member of the Spencer Club.

While residing in Mason City, Mrs. Gartland became a member of the Methodist Church, but after moving to Spencer she, with her husband, united with the First Congregational Church, to which she remained a faithful member.

Mrs. Gartland took active part in various church musical programs which have been sponsored through the church.

Surviving are her husband and two small children, Robert and Helen of Spencer; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Graham of Mason City, and Dr. Gartland’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Gartland of Rock Valley, other relatives and a host of friends.
