Antonette Gaul, 97, of Alton, died Tuesday, December 29, 1998 at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

A funeral services was held on Saturday, January 2, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. Reverend James Tigges officiated. Burial was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Alton under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Antonette was born June 25, 1901 at Bancroft, the daughter of John and Angeline (Budde) Haupert. She was raised and educated in the Bancroft area. In the early 1920s she moved to the Le Mars area where she did domestic work. She married Nicholas Gaul on January 12, 1926 at Bancroft. They made their home in Granville. In 1928 they moved to Alton. On November 19, 1993 they moved to the Abbey in Le Mars. Mr. Gaul died June 26, 1994. She had been a resident of Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars since July 1998.

Mrs. Gaul was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Rosary Society.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Donald and Vera Gaul of Le Mars, John and Nancy Gaul of Independence and Joseph and Linda Gaul of Gladstone, Missouri; four daughters, Shirley and her husband Richard Henshaw of Park Rapids, Minnesota, Delores Penning of Omaha, Nebraska, Audrey and her husband James Hibbing of Mesa, Arizona, and Helen Fisher of Clinton; a daughter-in-law, Mary Gaul of Waterloo; 28 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Wilma Haupert of Algona.

She was preceded in death by a son, James; a grandson, Patrick Gaul; four sisters, Gertrude Hatten, Louise Herbers, Loretta Vaske and Sylvaria Haupert; and six brothers, Michael and LeRoy, both in infancy; John, Aelred, Walter and Joseph.
