Mr. Gerald Vander Zwaag, age 77, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2016, at Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, December 27, at 11:00am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. Dennis Heitbrink will officiate. Lunch will be served at the church before proceeding to the Newkirk Cemetery for interment. Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Monday, December 26, with the family present from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, at the CHURCH.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Gerald Gerben was born on January 29, 1939, in Orange City, to Henry P. and Alvina (Kleinhesselink) Vander Zwaag. He was raised in the Newkirk area, where he attended the Newkirk High School.

On June 14, 1961, he married Janice Mae Blom in Newkirk, where they made their home and were members of the Newkirk Reformed Church. He co-owned and operated a water softener business. In 1996, they moved to Orange City, where they were members of the Trinity Reformed Church.

Gerald enjoyed trap shooting, reading, riding bike, dancing, playing cards, and spending time with his family.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Jan, his three daughters, Sherry (Mike) McNamara, of Greeley, Colorado; Sandy (Gary) Van Wettering, of Spencer, Iowa; and Shelly Norlen, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; seven grandchildren, Kayla (Sal) Raya; Zach (Laura) Van Wettering, Taylor (Nate) Thurlow; Sydney Van Wettering, Caitlin Norlen, Casey Van Wettering, and Collin Norlen; two brothers, Peter Dean (Marvelle) Vander Zwaag and Cliff (Aud) Vander Zwaag; and Jan’s siblings, Ruth (Daryl) Vaas, Wanda (Brian) Dittmann, John (Deb) Blom, and Craig (Sherie) Blom.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Ann, and a son-in-law, John Norlen.

Memorials may be directed to the Sanford Sheldon Home Health and Hospice.
