Mrs. Maria Gaalswyk passed away Thursday morning, March 14, 1946 at ten minutes past seven o'clock at the home of her son Arie Gaalswyk. She has been confined to her bed for the past several weeks with illness under good care. She was 87 years, 7 months and 17 days old.

Maria Oosthoek was born in the Province of North Holland, the Netherlands on July 27, 1858.

She was united in marriage to Tuenis Gaalswyk in February 1885. To this union three sons were born, Neal of Welcome, Minnesota, Arie of Rock Valley and Peter of Modesto, California. The family came to the United States in 1911 settling on a farm near Rock Valley.

In the spring of 1918 they retired from the farm and moved to Rock Valley. In the autumn of 1918 Mr. Gaalswyk passed away.

Besides her three sons she is survived by 24 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, five sisters, Mrs. M. Intveld of Rock Rapids, Mrs. H. Kluis of Orange City and three sisters still residing in Holland.

One brother and one sister preceded her in death. One grandson Tuenis P. Gaalswyk lost his life in a bombing mission over Germany during the last war.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at one o'clock at the home and 1:30 at the First Reformed Church. She has been a life long member of this church. Pall bearers were six grandsons. Peter, Marion, Arie and Henry Gaalswyk all of Welcome, Minnesota, and Joe and Alvin Gaalswyk of Rock Valley. A quartet sang "No Night There" during the church services. Reverend J.H. Aberson officiated. Interment took place in Valley View Cemetery.
