From the Rock Valley Bee, September 23, 1921:

Rev. Colenbrander was called to Le Mars Sunday morning by the death of his brother, G. Colenbrander who lived near Carmel. Mr. Colenbrander was taken sick about a week before his death with what seemed to be a paralysis of the throat. He had suffered with asthma before this time. He was taken to a hospital at Le Mars where he passed away a few days later as above stated. The deceased was a man who was highly respcted by all who knew him, and his neighbors and friends will greatly miss him in the community. The bereaved relatives have the sincere sympathy of many friends.

From the Alton Democrat, September 24, 1921, Sioux Center Times section:

GERRIT COLENBRANDER GONE
Death Suddenly Takes Sioux Center Resident--Leaves Family

We are sorry to record the sad news that Gerrit Colenbrander, a man well and favorably known in this vicinity and a brother to the Rev. Colenbrander of Rock alley, a true husband and father and a good all around Christian and citizen of this community, after a very short illness bid goodby to loved ones and was taken to occupy the "house not made with hands eternal in the heavens."

During the supper hour last Monday night he was taken sick with an aggravated case of throat trouble. A physician was called and after a few days on Friday he was hurried to LeMars where seven doctors worked on his case but without avail and on Saturday gave up the battle. An autopsy was ordered and it was discovered that it was a case of throat paralysis. Even with an X-ray it was impossible to discover this dreaded disease. All was done that could be done in the matter.

Only a few days ago we met the deceased in town and talked with him about farm matters. He looked the perfection of health and yet how frail is the tie that holds us here to earth and friends.

Mr. Colenbrander was forty years of age lacking ten days. Was born in Holland and came to this country while a young man. He was an energetic worker and a mind above the average and a splendid character. The Sunday before his death he taught his class at First church and the next Sunday his death was announced in the church. He leaves a wife and family and a sister Mrs. Den Herder and a brother the Rev. Dick Colenbrander of Rock Valley and his mother, Mrs. A. J. Van Lummel, wife of the pastor and formerly of Boyden.

The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon at First church where he has always worshipped. Rev. Lubbers in charge. His Sunday school class will follow his remains to the grave and also the teachers of the school where he has labored so faithfully and well. Next week we hope to pay a more fitting tribute to this faithful Christian gentleman who has passed along life's gateway and on to his newer and nobler work beyond.
