H. Vande Weerd, 92, Dies Tuesday, Services Friday

Funeral services for Henry Vande Weerd. Sr., 92, will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 at the Vander Ploeg Funeral home and at 2 o'clock at the First Reformed church. He died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Gerrit Wissink Tuesday afternoon. He has been seriously ill for about a year. He was born in The Netherlands March 11, 1865.
He is survived by 13 children six daughters: Mrs. Gert Sneller, Sioux Center; Mrs. Henry Franken, Hawarden; Mrs. Ralph Kooiker, Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. Gerrit Wissink. Rock Valley; Mrs. Henry Wesselink, Hull; and Mrs. Frank Gunnink, Montebello, Calif.; seven sons, Henry. Herman and Jake of Rock Valley; Edward of Preston, Minn.; Gysbert and Hein of Bellflower, Calif, and John of Stockton, III.; 48 grandchildren, 98 great-grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.

Henry Vande Weerd, Sr., was born in Ede. Gelderland in the Netherlands on March 11, 1865 and died at Rock Valley, June 4, 1957 at the Gerrit Wissink home having attained the age of 92 years, two months and 24 days. Mr. Vande Weerd was united in marriage to Jannigje Vonk on May 5, 1888. To this union were born 14 children, one son died in infancy. His wife preceded him in death Sept. 5, 1913. In 1916 he was united in marriage to Annie Kersbergen who passed away Nov. 30 1925. In 1930 he was united in marriage to Cornealia Burgers who preceded him in death in December 1939. Those surviving him are 13 children, seven sons, six daughters: Henry J., Harmen, and Jake of Rock Valley; Hein and Guy of Bellflower, Calif.; Ed of Preston, Minn.; John of Stockton, Ill.; Gertie (Mrs. Sneller of Sioux Center, Jennie, (Mrs. Ralph Kooiker) of Long Beach Ca. , Minnie, (Mrs. Henry Franken) of Hawarden, Bertha, (Mrs. Gerrit Wissink) of Rock Valley, Dena? (Mrs. Henry Wesselink) of Hull, Gertrude (Mrs. Frank Gunnick) of Montebello, Calif. He also leaves 48 grandchildren, 98 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren. Mr. Vande Weerd came to America in July, 1901 and settled at Maurice. He farmed in Sioux Center and Rock Valley vicinities. In 1918 he moved to Rock Valley, where he resided.

He served as elder and deacon in the Sioux Center and Rock Valley churches. Funeral services were held June 7 at the Vander Ploeg funeral home and the First Reformed church, Rock Valley. Rev. Aberson of Artesia, Calif. and Dr. Nelson Price of the Methodist church officiating. A favorite Dutch Psalm, 103 was sung. A ladies quartet, Mrs. Kenneth Van Voorst, Mrs. Wilbur Boer, Mrs. Henry Rozeboom and Mrs. Hubert Landegent sang "Land of the Unsetting Sun”. Mrs. George Van Beek was organist.

Pallbearers were six grandsons, Eugene Vande Weerd, Clarence Vande Weerd, Fred Vande Weerd, Bernard Wissink, Allen Franken, and Chester Vande Weerd.

Burial was at the Valley View cemetery, Rock Valley
