From the Rock Valley Bee, September 30, 1921:

MRS. J. PIERONI DEAD

Mrs. J. Pieroni passed away at the Rock Valley Hospital Saturday morning following an operation a few days earlier. After the operation she seemed to be getting along as well as could be expected, and it was thought that she would recover, but later other complications developed and she became worse and continued to fail in spite of all that could be done for her. This was her second operation. Last spring she was dangerously sick and an operation was performed and she was quite well for a few months. She was taken sick again about a week or ten days before her death.

The death of Mrs. Pieroni is made doubly sad from the fact that she leaves a family of five small children, one boy and four girls.

The subject of this sketch was born in Italy August 30, 1889, and was at the time of her death thirty-two years and twenty-four days old. She had lived in this country about twenty-eight years. She was married at Lima, Ohio, to J. Pieroni sixteen years ago. She and her husband resided in different places in Iowa and South Dakota until about three years ago when they came to Rock Valley where Mr. Pieroni has since conducted a fruit store. Besides her husband and children, she leaves one sister in Rock Valley and two sisters and her parents in Italy.

Funeral services were held from St. Mary's church in Rock Valley Monday morning, and the remains were taken to St. Mary's Cemetery for burial.

From the Alton Democrat, October 1, 1921: Rock Valley news:

Mrs. Anna Pieroni wife of Joe Pieroni died at the local hospital Saturday morning at ten o'clock. After having undergone an operation for stoppage of the bowels with the hope that relief might be obtained, and everything that could be done by surgical skill was of no avail to prolong life, but God decreed otherwise. "He took back the gift he had but loaned."

The deceased was born at Lima, Ohio, Aug 30th 1889, and at the time of her passing was 32 years and 25 days of age. She was married sixteen years ago, and was the mother of five children, all of which survive her. She came with her husband to Rock Valley over two years ago, and operated a confectionary and fruit store and she proved to be a helpmate in the true acceptance of the term. She was genial and courteous to those whom she came in contact, was a model neighbor, mother and companion. Her demise is keenly felt by her husband and little children to whom she was greatly attached.

The funeral occurred Monday morning at ten o'clock at the Catholic church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. John A. O'Rielly in the presence of many sympathizing friends. Her remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery south of town. The bereaved have the sympathy of their many friends in their hour of extreme sorrow.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Pieroni, Anna, b. 30 Aug 1891, d. 22 Sep 1921, wife of J., St. Marys Cem Rock Valley IA.

The 1920 U.S. Census for Rock Valley has Joe Peroni, age 51[?], immigrated 1891, naturalized 1899, born Italy, a fruit dealer; wife Anna (28), born in Ohio of Italian parents; and children Leona (8), born Iowa; Lenora (6), born South Dakota; Lelia (4), born South Dakota; Loretta (2), born South Dakota; and Leo (1/12), born Iowa; and unmarried sister-in-law Rosy Semoni (18), a saleslady in the fruit store.

From Ancestry.com: On July 10, 1922, in Canton, South Dakota, Joseph Pieroni, age 52, residence Rock Valley, born Italy, married widow Florence Tognari, age 38, residence Rock Valley, born Italy. This is almost certainly Anna's widower, although the marriage record says he is a bachelor; a few news notes in the Rock Valley Bee in 1923 and 1925 refer to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pieroni. His fruit store burns down in 1926, he sells a residence property in 1928, and then disappears from the online area newspapers. The family (Joe, Florence, his 4 daughters and one son, their twin sons, and his stepson and stepdaughter) are in Chicago in 1930.
