FUNERAL SERVICES HELD IN HAWARDEN AND IRETON FOR PROFESSOR AT STATE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI

Funeral services for Dr. Herbert E. French of Columbia, Missouri, a native of Ireton, were held at the Ross Funeral Home at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon and at the Methodist Church at 2:30.

Reverend Madison of Sioux Falls, a college friend of Dr. French, preached the funeral sermon and was assisted by Reverend Milton Schaper of Hawarden. Mrs. Mildred Anderson of Alcester sang. Burial was at Ireton.

Dr. French died at his home in Columbia Saturday evening from a cerebral hemorrhage. Last year Dr. French had a brain tumor removed but had recovered from this illness and resumed his work at the University of Missouri.

Dr. French had served as Professor of Chemistry in the Missouri University 28 years. He accepted this position immediately after receiving his Doctor’s Degree at the University of Illinois. During his 28 years as professor he had a year’s leave of absence from his duties in 1927 when he was with the Harvard Research Association.

Herbert E. French was born November 13, 1889 at Ireton, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim French. The family moved to Sioux City in 1906. He was graduated from Central High School in Sioux City and in 1915 from Morningside College. He received his Ph. D. Degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign.

In 1917 he married Cornelia McBurney, a daughter of Dr. D.A. McBurney, a well known Methodist leader in the northwest Iowa. His survivors are the widow, Cornelia; a son, Herbert A. French, Jefferson City, Missouri, a newsman; a sister, Miss Ruth French of Hawarden, and a brother, J.W .Struble of Rapid City, South Dakota.
