John Fonkert, 67, passed away Saturday at 4 p. m. in the Good Samaritan Hospital in Sheldon after an illness of 24 hours.

He was well on Friday morning and did the chores. At noon Friday he became ill and the doctor was called who declared the illness lobar pneumonia.

Mr. Fonkert was taken to the hospital at Sheldon where he died a day later.

The decedent was born in Pella, lowa, on January 16, 1877 and came to Sioux County with his parents in 1887. He was married to Miss Kate Zorgdrager in the year 1903 and lived after his marriage in the Newkirk vicinity where he farmed and operated a threshing machine.

Surviving are his wife and 4 children, 1 child having died in infancy. The children are Nellie, Mrs. Walter Van Rooyen of Orange City. Sylvan Fonkert of Hospers; Pvt. Peter Fonkert in the armed service at Bakersfield, California, and Sgt. John M. Fonkert of San Luis Obispo, California. There are 7 grandchildren.

Surviving also are one sister Mrs. Edward Roos of Ashton and two half-brothers, Peter and Gerrit Fonkert of Sheldon.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday at Newkirk with Reverend Z. Roetman pastor of the church officiating. Interment was made at Newkirk.
