Robert L. "Bob" Burkard, 81, of rural Le Mars passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday September 21, 2016 at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday September 28, 2016 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens with Rev. William McCarthy celebrating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars at a later date. Visitation will be anytime after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday September 27, 2016 at the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there will be a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Catholic Order of Foresters rosary. Visitation will resume on Wednesday at the Church for one hour before the Mass. Expressions of sympathy may be extended to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com.

Robert Louis Burkard was born November 29, 1934 in Le Mars, IA, the son of Henry and Catherine (Ruether) Burkard. Bob grew up near Le Mars and attended St. Joseph's Catholic School. He enlisted in the United States Army and served overseas in Germany. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Le Mars to farm. Bob married Lois Penning on May 10, 1958 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Granville, IA. Following their marriage the couple farmed for a few years in the Oyens area and then moved to the Kingsley area where they continued to farm for several years. They moved back to the Oyens area where they farmed and lived just south of Oyens. Due to health issues Bob was no longer able to farm and went to work for Harkers in Le Mars for several years and then was employed with the City of Le Mars caring for the golf course and parks. He retired from the City after 27 years to enjoyed traveling to their out of state children, but the joy in their lives was all their grandchildren. His wife Lois passed away on April 28, 2001. Bob later married Abby Rael on April 4, 2007 at Marcus, IA. They resided at their current residence near Oyens, IA

Bob was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the American Legion, Wasmer Post #241.

Bob enjoyed taking care of the farm, vegetable and flower gardening, taking care of pets, mowing, fishing, landscaping, and watching western movies on T.V.

Survivors include his wife Abby of Le Mars; his children: Deb (Randy) Madsen of Le Mars, Denise (Pete) Riley of Aurora, Colorado, Duane (Kim) Burkard of Sacramento, California, Dale Burkard of Le Mars, Diana (David) Hicks of Yankton, SD, Darin (Laura) Burkard of Omaha, NE, Doug (Beth) Burkard of DeSoto, Kansas, Dawn Burkard of Vermillion, SD, Darla (Scott) Wynia of Lincoln, NE; Bobbi (Dee Jay) Kellen of Le Mars, Marc (Lori) Evans of Ankeny, IA, Byron (Michelle) Evans of Midlands, TX, and Melissa (Richard) Ceballos of Florida; 34 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother Chris (Gloria) Burkard of Kerrville, TX; a sister-in-law Delores Burkard of Le Mars; a special niece Kim (Penning) Stoos of Sgt. Bluff, IA; and many other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Henry and Catherine Burkard; his first wife Lois Burkard; and a brother Ron Burkard.
