Hawarden Independent of April 4, 1940

Mrs. Harry L. Baker, a long time resident of Hawarden, passed away at her home here at 1:30 Tuesday morning, following a lingering illness of several years. She had enjoyed an active life up until about 3 years ago when she first became ill and has been an invalid since that time during which period she was tenderly cared for by her husband. She had been bedfast for the past five months during which time she suffered much but with great fortitude. Death came as a release from intense suffering.

Funeral services will be held at the home at 2 o'clock and at the Associated church at 2:30 this afternoon with Rev. T. H. Harding officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill cemetery. Etta Gifford was born at LeMars August 22, 1875, and passed away in Hawarden April 2, 1940, at the age of 64 years, 7 months and 10 days. She spent her youth in LeMars and came to Hawarden with her people as a young woman and has since continued to reside in this city. She was united in marriage with Harry L. Baker a Sioux Falls on July 5, 1918. Besides her husband, she is survived by on son by a former marriage, Dale Glover of Jersey City, N. J.; two brothers Oscar Gifford of Sioux City and Jay Gifford of Beresford; a half-sister Mrs; John A. Storts of Redwood Falls Minn., and a half-brother, Gaylord Lester of Hawarden.

Mrs. Baker was a member of the Royal Neighbor and Woodmen Circle lodges in Hawarden in which she had held various offices. She was extremely loyal to those orders and found great joy when they brought their meetings to her sick room during her long illness. She was a good neighbor, generous, kind and sympathetic, and was highly esteemed by many long time friends.
