Sioux County Capital May 2, 1978

Gerrit Raymond De Jong, age 80, of Maurice, passed away suddenly April 25 at the Orange City
Municipal Hospital, where he had been taken after suffering an apparent heart attack. Mr. ,De Jong was born November 4, 1897, at Orange City, the son of Peter G. and Petronella Neevel De Jong. He married Gertie Brink on January 28, 1920, at Maurice.

They lived on a farm east of Maurice until two years ago when they moved into town. He was a member of the Maurice First Reformed Church.

Survivors are the widow; one daughter, Mrs. William (Imo) Mulder, of Maurice; three grandchildren, Patricia,, of Los Angeles, Calif., Leslie, of Orange City, and Donn, of Ames; two brothers, Harry and Nelson, both of Orange City; and a half-sister, Mrs. Fred (Greta) Eason, of Alton. "Ray" was proceeded in death by a sister, Nellie.

Funeral services were held April 28 at the First Reformed Church of Maurice. The Rev. Erwin R. Voogd officiated. Interment was at Sherman Township Cemetery, under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City. Special music was provided by Mrs. Pierce Jansma, Mrs. E. R. Voogd, James Vlieger, and Merlyn De Jager. They sang "Abide With Me." The congregation sang a verse from Dutch Psalm 68. Mrs. Norman Van Ommeren was organist. Casket bearers were Albert Dekker, John Melles, Gordon Brink, Robert Cleveringa, David Kuiken, and Wilbur De Jong.
