Maurice Times August 12, 1916

James DeJong was born March 10 1850 and died August 8 1916 being 66 years 5 months and 29 days old. The deceased was born in Pella and came to Sioux County early in the seven ties. In 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Jane Pas of Orange City. To this union nine children were born. Minnie, the eldest child, died while visiting an uncle in Washington in 1899 also of typhoid fever.

The surviving children are Conrad. Mrs. John DeKock, Mrs. P. Van Roekel, Hubert, Mrs. Wm. Duven and Bertha, Fred and Harold who are yet at home. There are 12 grandchildren. They first lived on a farm east of Orange City for two years and then moved on a homestead three miles southeast where they lived until the death of Mrs. De Jong which occurred May 8, 1910 when he retired and moved to Maurice

Mr. De Jong was a prominent member of the First Ref. Church having been a member of the consistory for several years. He was also active in civic life and was always working for the moral spirit of the community and was always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need or trouble. We will all miss his happy greeting and pleasant smile. Our sympathy is extended to the sorrowing children and especially to the three who were yet at home because it will doubtless break up their home.

The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in the First Reformed church and interment made in the Sherman Township cemetery. The funeral was largely attended. Nearly all the business houses were closed.

Alton Democrat issue of 12 August 1916, Maurice column:

On Tuesday morning occurred the death of James De Jong, who has been seriously ill with typhoid fever for the past two weeks. Mr. De Jong was in such a condition from the time he took sick until his death, that two nurses were required constantly. He was in the seventy's, was a Christian man and one of the most influential men in the Dutch Reformed church. He was always doing his duty and on the lookout for some one[sic] in trouble and needed aid. He leaves to mourn his departure four sons and four daughters, Fred, Harold and and[sic] Bertha De Jong who are still at home, Mrs. Will Duven, Mrs. Peter Van Roekel, Mrs. John De Koek, Conrad De Jong and Hubert De Jong, all who live in or near town. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon in the Dutch Reformed church. The sons and daughters have the greatest sympathy of the community.
