Mr. Daniel Alons, age 85, of Sioux Center, formerly of Hospers, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at Sioux Center Health.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, July 16, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Marvin Leese will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hospers Cemetery. There will be a prayer service on Saturday, at 9:30am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.
Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.
Daniel was born on December 5, 1930, in Hospers, the son of Louis and Elizabeth (Uittenbogaard) Alons. He was raised on his parents’ farm at Hospers and attended the Hospers Christian School.
On March 27, 1951, he married Henrietta Gertrude Duistermars at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. They farmed at Hospers, raising crops, cattle, pigs, chickens, and goats; and milking cows for many years. He also worked at the Tri-State Livestock Company in Sioux Center. Henrietta passed away on August 26, 2014, in Hull.
In March of this year, Dan moved to Crown Pointe Independent Living in Sioux Center.
He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he belonged to the Men’s Society. He also served on the board of directors of the Hospers Christian School and was a member of the Hospers Saddle Club.
He enjoyed playing board and card games and bowling, and in his earlier years, he played softball and volleyball.
Survivors include his six children, Gail (Randy) Grotenhuis, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Loren (Reena) Alons, of Hospers; Cheryl Van’t Hof (Steve Artz), of Hull; Daryl Alons (Patty Graber), of Sioux Falls; Lynn Mark (Lloyd Weber), of Sheldon; and Ruth (Russell) Coons, of Ireton; 23 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; two brothers, Art Alons, of Sheldon, and Bernard Alons, of Texas; a sister, Magdalane Doorenbos, of Sioux Center; and many nephews and nieces.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Larry Van’t Hof; two sisters, Mary Van Buren and one in infancy, and a brother in infancy.
