James (Jacobus) Boogerd was born on March 26, 1861, in Zeeland, Netherlands, the child of his parents. He married Agnes (Akke) Bouma on June 2, 1890, in Cincinnati, Ohio. They had nine children in 22 years.

He died on September 18, 1920, in Hull, Iowa, at the age of 59, and was buried at Hope Cemetery, Hull, Sioux County, Iowa.
