From the Rock Valley Bee, April 21, 1944:

FUNERAL, ROEL DE YOUNG, IS HELD FRIDAY

Roel De Young was born on the 23rd of March 1858 at South Holland, Ill., on March 31, 1881 1944 having attained the age of 86 years and 20 days.
He was united in marriage to Grietje Nieuwenhof at South Holland, Ill. on March 31, 1881.
[Note that there is obviously a line missing that includes the month and day of his death, and that South Holland, Ill. is given twice. It is impossible to tell whether the repeat was accidental, or whether he was born as well as married there.]

To this union eight children were born. Four years later they came to Iowa, settling in Sioux county, southwest of Sioux Center, where Mr. De Young devoted himself to farming. In the year 1880 he built the first store at what is known as Middleburg and continued in business there until they moved to Rock Valley where the family resided since. Mrs. De Yong preceded him in death in 1920 and also one son Edward, in 1921 and another, Jake, in 1941. In April, 1921, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Effie Postma.

He is survived by his widow and six children, Katie, Mrs. Vander Wilt, of Sibley; Anna, Mrs. Bomgaars of Hull; Gerty, Mrs. B. Ver Steeg of Hull; Martin and Herman of Long Beach, Calif., John of Los Angeles; also by 27 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Mr. De Young served for many years as elder of the First Reformed church.

Funeral services were held at the First Reformed church April 14, conducted by Rev. H. J. Aberson. A duet, "Face to Face," was sung by Mrs. Allen Bouthuis and Mrs. Gerrit Wissink. A solo, "In the Garden," was sung by Hermina Miersuis[?], 5 year old granddaughter of the deceased. [Followed by a sentimental poem.]
