Hawarden Independent December 7, 1972

Doug Davis, 18, of Hawarden was fatally injured Tuesday morning when the car which he was driving struck a bridge on a South Dakota gravel road, two miles west and three miles south of Hawarden. Authorities report that the accident occurred around 7:20 a.m. Davis had reportedly left home for work around 7:15 a.m. The accident occurred about one mile north of the Davis home. The youth was north bound on the gravel road, just south of the Herman Holtkamp residence coming down a steep hill when the car went off on the right shoulder and struck a bridge abutment at the base of the hill. The youth was found in the car around 7:45 a.m. and Dr. Louis Shoraga of Alcester was called. The youth was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Dr. Shoraga said the cause of death was due to head injuries sustained when the youth hit the windshield and the steering wheel. Authorities believe that the youth had turned on the defroster fan and that the windshield had clouded over unabling him to see the road. South Dakota Highway Patrolman Dave Leemhuis reports that no skid marks or signs of attempting to stop were evident. The youth was reportedly on his way to work at the Larry Nilson farm two miles from the scene of the accident.
