From the Alton Democrat, February 5, 1916: What's Doing At The County Seat

On Monday evening Albert Popma passed away at the age of sixty-four years and ten months. He had a short sickness of only a few days. On Wednesday of last week he attended the funeral of Mrs. K. Versteeg, and the day after he became sick with la grippe. As a young man of about twenty years he came from the Netherlands to this country with his parents, who resided at Pella. In the year 1877 he was united in marriage to Heintje Dingeman. The couple lived in this town for about 32 years. Mr. Popma was the first barber here and later was assisted by his brother, Gerrit.

Deceased is survived by the following children: Mrs. Andries Pap of near Hull, Mrs. H. Vander Schoor of this town, John of this town, Walter of Cherokee, Frank at Boise, Idaho, Willem at Marcus, and Mrs. Hein Rozeboom of this place. He has three brothers, Gerrit of Orange City, Frans of Maurice, Leendert of Pella; and a sister, Mrs. Kate Rengelstein of Pella. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 P.M. at the home and 2:00 o'clock in the First Reformed church.

A. POPMA SUCCUMBED TO GRIP

Mr. A. Popma at the age of 18 came with his parents to Pella direct from the Netherlands. Some 36 years ago he came to Orange City and for a time followed farming. He opened the first barber shop of this town and followed that vocation during the remainder of his active life. [Followed by the circumstances of his death and his survivors, similar to the report in the Alton Democrat, also noting that his wife survives him, as well.]
