Mr. Marion Van Zandbergen, age 88, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, June 6, 2016, at Unity Point Health in Sioux City.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, June 11, at 10:30am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. David Powers will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Newkirk Cemetery in rural Hospers. Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Marion Arthur was born on March 11, 1928, to Arie and Trina (Hoffs) Van Zandbergen of rural Orange City. He was raised on the farm and graduated from the Newkirk School. He entered the United States Armed Forces in January of 1953. Marion received his basic training and attended leadership school at Camp Chaffee in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He then served with the Army Artillery FDC (Fire Division Corps) in Korea.

On March 11, 1955, he married Ruth Elaine Van Velzen at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. They made their home on the farm where Marion was born.

Mr. Van Zandbergen was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Reuter American Legion Post in Hospers, and served on the board of directors of the Hospers Elevator. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing and horseshoe pitching.

Survivors include his wife of more than 61 years; a daughter and her husband, Mary and Gary Karssen, of Omaha, Nebraska; a son, Reed Van Zandbergen, of Orange City; a daughter-in-law and her husband, Karri and Martin McKinnon, of Charleston, South Carolina; six grandchildren, and their spouses, Kara and David Nelson, of Lenexa, Kansas; Greg and Kelsey Karssen, of Ankeny; and Katie Vega, Arie Van Zandbergen, and his fiancé, Jennifer Lewandowski, Stephen and Carolyn Van Zandbergen, and Michael Van Zandbergen, all of Columbus, Ohio; eight great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Adrian and Carol Van Zandbergen, of Orange City; a sister-in-law, Carol J. Van Zandbergen, of Denver, Colorado; and Ruth’s siblings and their spouses, Carol Van Velzen, of Atlanta, Georgia; Ted and Eleanor Vonk, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Mary Sue and Jerry Westling, of Hawarden.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Ward Van Zandbergen; a brother and his wife, Harold and Eldora Van Zandbergen; Ruth’s parents, William and Susan Van Velzen, and her brother, Cornelius Van Velzen.
