Mr. Lawrence Bloemendaal, age 94, of Alton, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2016, at the Sunrise Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

A family graveside service was held on Thursday, June 2, at the Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton. Dean Dykstra officiated.

Arrangements were with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City, Iowa.

Lawrence James was born on August 10, 1921, in Alton, the son of James and Kate (Rens) Bloemendaal. He was raised in Alton, where he graduated from the Alton High School. Later he attended Northwestern College in Orange City and earned a master’s degree at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

On September 18, 1946, he married Frances D. Brink in Omaha, Nebraska. They made their home in Alton, where they owned and operated the Bloemendaal Hatchery. Frances passed away on June 14, 2003.

He enjoyed reading, being with his family, traveling, and watching NCAA basketball and professional tennis.

Survivors include his three children and their spouses, Nora and Arie Reekers, of Lawton, Iowa; Nita and Steve Savage, of Chicago, Illinois; and Nolan and JoAnn Bloemendaal, of Emory, South Dakota; two grandsons, Curt Reekers (Jennifer), of Coralville, Iowa; and Chad Reekers (Sonia), of Sioux City; two great-grandsons, Carter and Nickolas, also of Sioux City; and a brother and his wife, Kenneth and Daisy Bloemendaal, of The Villages, Florida.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Everett Bloemendaal.
