Mrs. Dorothy Bloemendaal, age 94, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2016, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, June 4, at 10:00am, at the New Hope Evangelical Free Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jeffrey Whitt will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Dorothy Eileen Bloemendaal was born on December, 18, 1921, in Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of George and Delia (De Velder) Foreman. She was raised and attended school in Plymouth and Sioux Counties and graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in education.

On May 3, 1945, she married Clifford Bloemendaal. As the wife of an Air Force pilot, she and her family lived in numerous places across the United States. She was also a gifted elementary school teacher. After having spent a number of years in north Florida, she returned to northwest Iowa.

Mrs. Bloemendaal loved to travel and enjoyed music. She played the harmonica and the organ and was active in a musical group while living in Leesburg, Florida.

Since moving to Orange City, she attended the New Hope Evangelical Free Church.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Brent and Sherrie Bloemendaal, of Zionsville, Indiana; and Robert and Mary Bloemendaal, of Phelan, California; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Bloemendaal of Lafayette, Georgia; a former daughter-in-law, Susan Bloemendaal, of Peachtree City, Georgia; six grandchildren, Max (Christina) Bloemendaal, Ben (Jayne) Bloemendaal, Natalie (Andrew) Placek, Josh (Ella) Bloemendaal, Jessica (Brandon) Droeger, and Audrey (Reed) O’Neal; five great-grandchildren, and one on the way; a sister-in-law, Avis Foreman, of Memphis, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband; a son, Daniel Bloemendaal; two brothers and their wives, J. Lester and Ruth Foreman and Donald and Greta Foreman; and a sister and her husband, Marjorie and Alvin Kleinwolterink.
