Mr. Larry Bloemendaal, age 77, of Alton, passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, after a brief illness with liver cancer.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, May 28, at 11:00am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. Dennis Hietbrink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 9:45am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Larry Lee was born on May 24, 1939, in rural Sheldon, the son of Arie and Helen (Smit) Bloemendaal. He was raised in rural Alton, graduating from the Newkirk Public School. Prior to farming, he was employed at the Alton Elevator and Lumber Yard for a few years.

On June 26, 1959, he married Elsie Jean Cleveringa at the Carmel Reformed Church. They farmed north of Alton, where in 1972, he lost his right hand in a farming accident. Elsie passed away on July 28, 1998, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Besides being a farmer, Larry was also a fat cattle buyer for several packing houses. In addition, he operated L. B. Cattle, raising feeder cattle.

On August 11, 1999, he married Alice Lorraine Weber Bohr at the Newkirk Reformed Church. They made their home in Alton.

He was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church and a former member of the Sioux County Cattle Feeders Association and the Sioux County Youth Fair Board of Directors. He also served as a 4-H Youth Leader and as a church softball team coach, and he belonged to the Northwestern College Raider Rooters.

He enjoyed attending cattle sales, bowling, family outings, fishing, golfing, playing cards, traveling, and watching all sporting events.

Survivors include his wife of more than sixteen years, Alice; six daughters and their husbands, Brenda and Floyd Mauch, of Des Moines; Sandra and Arlan Britt, of Le Mars; Wanda and Steve Gerzel, of Grayslake, Illinois; Paula Bloemendaal, of Falls Church, Virginia; Donna and Keith Westhoff, of Struble; and Tamara Bloemendaal, of Cedar Rapids; seventeen grandchildren, Alicia (Aloe) Hunafa, Corey Blackmore, Andrew (Roxane) Britt, Angela (Ben) Stearns, Stacia (Deyontae) Batiste, Steven Britt, Christopher Britt (fiance’, Jeana De Hoet), Sabrina Gerzel, Brandon Gerzel, Brittany (Cameron) Jackowiak, Brady Westhoff, Brooke Westhoff, Maleik Jackson, TMartez Jackson, Tamera Jackson, Nick (Maggie) Mauch, and Melissa (Scott) Ausborn; fifteen great-grandchildren; three sisters and their husbands, Connie and Alden Menning and Barbara and Elwin Top, all of Orange City; and Ardis and Brad Van Rooyen, of Eldridge; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carolyn (Rich) Odens, Calvin (Lois) Cleveringa, Colleen Bomgaars, Frank Weber, Carol (Mike) Smith, and Herb Norton.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Gail Bloemendaal; a grandson, Senquez Lee Jackson; a brother-in-law, Dave Bomgaars; a sister-in-law, Mary Norton; his step-mother, Matilda Ter Horst; and his parents-in-law, Clarence W. and Cynthia Cleveringa.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
