From the Rock Valley Bee, June 18, 1915:

C. E. Werk, a brotherinlaw of E. S. Thayer, of Boyden, died Saturday from a cancer. A few weeks ago he was taken to the hospital at Sheldon where he submitted to an operation in hopes that he might obtain some relief, but there was no chance for his recovery. He failed rapidly until the final summons came. The deceased was sixty years of age, and a man highly respected by all. He had been in Rock Valley on several different occasions and was quite well known here. Funeral services were held at Boyden Tuesday afternoon.
