John Bergsma, 81, of Orange City died Saturday, March 23, 2002, at the Orange City Hospital Long Term Care Facility.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the Redeemer United Reformed Church in Orange City. The Reverend Ralph A. Pontier officiated. Burial followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Oolman Funeral Home, Orange City.

John was born August 29, 1920, at rural Orange City, the son of Charlie and Bertha (Haarsma) Bergsma. He was raised at Orange City.

On March 17, 1943, he married Marie Huisman at Orange City. They farmed at Maurice until 1967 when they moved into Orange City. Mrs. Bergsma died July 14, 1994, at Orange City. In November 1996, John became a resident of the Long Term Care Facility.

Mr. Bergsma was a member of the Redeemer United Reformed Church. He enjoyed fishing, spending time at the adult activity center in Orange City, and being with his grandchildren.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Delmar and Karen Bergsma of Milford; a daughter and her husband, Lavonne and Dennis Ritenour of Xenia, Ohio; six grandchildren, Jason Bergsma, and his wife, Ann, Todd Bergsma and Nicholas, Benjamin, Philip and Kay Ritenour; and a great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Marie Bergsma.
