John Beltman, a pioneer of this vicinity, died Sunday, September 6 at the Sheldon Hospital at the age of 94 years and 5 months. Three weeks ago Mr. Beltman fell and broke his hip while living at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arie Lucas of Sheldon.

Born in the Netherlands, Mr. Beltman came with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beltman, and sister to the United States when a boy. The family homesteaded two miles south and half mile west of Orange City.

In March 1890 he married Minnie Van Amerongen at Orange City and the couple famed the home place until they moved to Alton. Mrs. Beltman died 28 years ago and her husband returned to the farm to live with his youngest son, William, and family. Eight years ago he returned to Alton and made his home with his oldest daughter, Mrs. Anthony Schuller. The last six months he has lived at Sheldon with Mr. and Mrs. Arie Lucas.

Mr. Beltman was the father of nine children, of whom several survive him, namely, Jennie, Mrs. Anthony Schuller of Alton; Minnie, Mrs. Arie Lucas of Sheldon; Reverend Henry of Tuscon, Arizona; Gerrit and Mrs. John Rexwinkel of Alton; John of Muscatine; William of Orange City. Also surviving are 29 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.

Two children, Mrs. Ben Grotenhuis and Henrietta, preceded him in death.

For many years, Mr. Beltman served as deacon or elder in the First Reformed Church of Alton. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in this Church, Revrend Meyer officating, and interment was in Nassau Township Cemetery.

Devoted to his family and his church, Mr. Beltman was respected and well liked by his neighbors and many friends.
