In the same issue of the Democrat:

On Thursday night some sneak-thief got into the late John Lucas barn and stole the dead man's mason's tools. We sincerely hope and trust that every time this sneakthief uses these tools his heart will burst with pride when he thinks of stealing $15.00 worth of property from a poor old widow. The tools had been sold to Father Brune on Thursday afternoon and were to be delivered at his place on Friday.

This John Lucas does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index.

Those researching this family should be aware that from 1883 until 1914 there were two John Lucas's living in Alton: the John P. Lucas of this obituary, a mason and plasterer residing in North Alton, and generally identified as a German; and John Lucas, a Dutch shoemaker and truck farmer residing in South Alton. This potential confusion is compounded by the fact that each of them had a son named John.
