Mr. Arthur Pluim, age 94, of Alton, passed away on Monday, April 18, 2016, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Friday, April 22, at 10:30am, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. The Rev. Fr. Terry Roder will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the church cemetery. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Arthur Guy was born on March 25, 1922, in Sioux Center, the son of John and Tillie (Mol) Pluim. He was raised in Sioux Center, Ireton, and Hospers. In 1937, he moved with his family to Alton, where he graduated from the high school. During World War II, he served in the United States Army, including fighting in the battle of Iwo Jima.

On May 30, 1959, he married Anita Gruber in Hospers. They made their home in Alton, where she passed away on June 6, 2005.

In later years, he became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City and Prairie Ridge.

Art was a laborer in the construction industry, especially for the Slagle Company in Alton. He also was employed at the Farmers Cooperative in Alton.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Floyd American Legion Post in Alton, as well as the Granville Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his brother and his wife, Orville and Audrey Pluim, of Rock Valley; a brother-in-law and his wife, Roger and Luanna Gruber, of Sioux City; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters and their husbands, Jean and Roger Stenstrom and Alice and Carl Heidebrink; and a brother-in-law, Carl Gruber.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Luke’s Children’s Miracle Network, 2720 Stone Park Boulevard, Sioux City, Iowa 51104, and St. Joseph’s Indian School, 1301 North Main Street, Chamberlain, South Dakota 57325.
