Robert C. Groom, 72, of Ireton died Thursday, September 1, 1994, at a Sioux city hospital. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday September 3, at the United Methodist Church in Ireton with the. Reverend Dean Shelly officiated. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Ireton. Visitation was from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Ireton.

Mr. Groom was born May 27, 1922 in Dubuque, the son of Arthur G. and Amy (Clarke) Groom. He married Charlene "Pat" Wade Jones November 20, 1948, in Lancaster, WI. She died October 27, 1993. He was in the U.S Air Force six years, serving in North Africa three years and Italy three years. He taught at George prior to becoming a teacher, principal and later superintendent at Ireton for 25 years. He also served as director of the fourcounty Poverty Program for six years and had served on the West Sioux School Board, Ireton City Council, and as mayor of Ireton for four years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodges at Hawarden, Le Mars and Sioux City.

Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Groom Harry and her husband, Lee R. of Ireton, and Sandy Groom Meeks of Ireton; and four grandchildren, Bobbi and Carin Harry and Josh and Justin Meeks.
