Gertrude Sedgewick was born January 27, 1901 in Chicago, IL, to parents William and Bessie (Grow)
Sedgewick and entered into death on September 2, 1994, at Morningside Manor in Alcester, SD at the age of 93 years, seven months and five days. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, September 6, 1994, at the Nathanael Lutheran Church of Alcester, SD, with the Reverend Robert Jones officiating. Burial took place in Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. As a small child, she moved with her parents to Hawarden, where she attended grade school and high school. After graduation she attended Grinnell College in Grinnell and taught country school near Alcester. Gertrude married Clarence Carlson on June 4, 1925. The couple fanned near Alcester. After Clarence's death on June 19, 1985, Gertrude entered Morningside Manor. She was an active member of Nathanael Lutheran Church where she directed the choir and participated in the women's organizations. She was also a member of Eastern Star.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Gordon, her daughter Jean and her brother Lowell of Omaha, NE. Among those who survive and who gratefully shared her life are her children, Ruth and her husband Bob LeBarr of Rogers AR, Rodney and his wife Pat Loris of Alcester, and Beth and her husband Bernie Helgoe of Minneapolis, MN; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a nephew James Sedgewick of Birmingham, AL.
